STROBES & OTHER LIGHTS

Untitled photo

So as much as I love to use natural light and all of it's nuances, there comes a point where you need to understand how to shoot when the light available is not quite right or you need to be able to control the light.

I found it quite hard to move the sun so that it suited my creative inspiration. So I decided it was time to get my own mini suns so that I could place them where I wanted.

I started with the purchase of a flash and soon realised that the fact that I had a flash did not mean I knew how to use it.

So the journey began and soon I had 3 flashes and some triggers. Through lots of trial and error, I managed to figure out how to use these 3 lights and started to create some really awesome images. I found that I could be a lot more creative with my lighting if I could control it and with my setup I was able to start being more creative.

I soon realised that the flash lights were starting to limit me. I was pushing them hard but they were at their limits. It was time to see what else was out there.

The fact that I had pushed these lights to their limits, I knew exactly what my next purchase needed to be. I just needed to see what was out there.

After many hours of research and deliberation I found exactly what I was looking for.

I found GODOX

My first GODOX light was the RS600P which I purchased from my now friend, Gerhard, who worked for the company who had the distribution license in South Africa.

It was a game changer!  It was powerful, it was so easy to work and it was portable, which meant I wasn't confined to a studio setup.

The 3 flashes were now used as fill, hair and background lights.

Fast forward a couple of years, I am now a proud Ambassador for GODOX SA.

So let me show you some of the images I have been able to get with these amazing lights.

Just so that we are clear, I have a particular style when shooting with my lights and it does not mean that this is how you should use your lights.

Coming from my background in Street Photography, I love shadows and hard light and you will see that many of my images are shot using a 7 inch reflector or something similar.

The images that follow are mostly captured in my studio. I don't feel the need to have a ton of lights and cope very well with the AD600, AD300, AD200 and the AD100 (I have 1 of each).

In most of the images, I have used just 1 light to create my vision.

The next couple of images are captured using a single light with my reflector.

As you can see, although I am using the same setup, the quality of light varies depending on the power setting, the distance the light is from the model and the position of the light.

Another favourite light setup, is lighting from above using a 120cm Octa. It is nice to have a big Octa, but not necessary as I have done this type of setup using a small 65 cm Octa. In fact, it doesn't necessarily need to be an Octa, a square would work just as well.

Let me show you........

This particular setup I have the light from above as well as my AD200 giving a pop of light to the face.

Most of the shots below I would have not used the pop of light.

In this next shot, I have used the overhead lighting setup as you can see in the BTS shot.

Learning to use your strobes will make a huge difference in the type of work you can create.

It will build your confidence as a photographer and allow you to be more creative in the work you produce.

Let's have a look at some work using just 1 light........
